Fujifilm X10

The Fujifilm X10 ($599.95 direct) may look like an older camera on the outside, but it's a purely digital point-and-shoot with some nice features that photographers should appreciate. Along with the X100 and recently announced X-Pro1, the camera is part of Fuji's X series?a group of unique cameras that are aimed at enthusiasts. The X10 is set apart from other point-and-shoots by its larger image sensor, bright optical viewfinder, abundant physical controls, and Raw shooting capability. It doesn't manage to oust the Canon PowerShot S100 ($429.99, 4.5 stars) as our Editor's Choice for high-end compacts, but if you're looking for a zooming compact with a good optical viewfinder, the camera is worth consideration.

Design and Features
From a distance, the X10 could easily be mistaken for a 1970s-era 35mm camera. Its all-black finish and optical viewfinder fit the bill, but the camera's disguise is betrayed by the modern rear LCD and an abundance of button and dials. It's a bit larger than most compact cameras, measuring 2.7 by 4.6 by 2.2 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 12.3 ounces. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 ($499.99, 3.5 stars), which delivers a similar zoom range but lacks an optical finder, is only 2.6 by 4.3 by 1.7 inches and a bit lighter at 9.5 ounces.

Unlike most modern cameras, the X10 lacks a power switch. To turn the camera on, you must remove the lens cap and twist the lens away from its Off position. You also twist the lens to change its focal length?there are no power zoom controls like on other compact cameras. This gives you more control over the zoom action, but also makes the camera a bit awkward to use?especially if you're shooting via the optical viewfinder. Other cameras in this class have optical finders, including the Canon PowerShot G12 ($499.99, 2.5 stars), but they are generally much smaller and don't lend themselves to regular use.

The viewfinder is bright and clear enough for regular use, but it is not without its foibles. It doesn't cover the entirety of the frame, only about 80 percent, so for tightly-composed photos you'll probably want to use the rear LCD. It is also without any sort of information display. There is no focus confirmation, so you'll have to place your trust in the camera's autofocus system. By default, the camera uses a center focusing point, although you can change that manually. If you use something other than center as the point, it's up to you to remember where in the frame the camera is focusing and translate that to a position in the finder.

Placing trust in the autofocus is not something to be worried about?I was able to raise the camera to my eye for quick street shots and the X10 nailed the focus quickly and consistently. There is an option to have the camera make an audible beep when focus is locked, but street shooters are likely to disable this. There is no way to separate the focus confirm beep and the shutter sound clip, which is unfortunate as the desire to have an audible confirmation of focus lock does not go hand-in-hand with that to have the camera play a fake shutter noise when a photo is snapped.

I also found that using the zoom lens and the optical finder together could be a bit awkward. My hand would generally get in the way of the finder when adjusting the focal length, which makes grabbing quick shots difficult. I also inadvertently added fingerprints to the front of the finder when operating the zoom on several occasions, which very noticeably affected its clarity.

The 4x zoom lens is the equivalent of a 28-112mm f/2-2.8 in 35mm photography. It's a very sensible zoom range?although it lacks the telephoto reach needed for sports, birding, and similar applications. Other top-end compacts feature similar zoom ranges and fast lenses, although the Nikon Coolpix P7100 ($499.95, 4 stars) leads the pack with a 7.1x (28-200mm f/2.8-5.6) lens. The camera has a very nice macro mode to allow you to focus on objects that are very close to the lens. Enabling it also enables the rear LCD, as you cannot get accurate framing with the optical finder when shooting on a close object due to parallax. This is true for any camera that has a viewing lens that is offset from its taking lens.

The X10's rear LCD isn't the best in its class. It is 2.8 inches in size, a bit smaller than the 3-inch displays?that are par for the course in this class of camera, but does offer the same 460k dot resolution that is common to the Canon PowerShot S100, Panasonic LX5, and Canon G12. Both the Nikon P7100 and the Samsung TL500 ($449, 3 stars) offer 921k dot screens. The X10's LCD is bright, so you won't have any trouble using it on a sunny day?and the optical finder is there if you're in a situation where glare cannot be avoided?but it's easier to confirm critical focus on a higher-resolution display.

You'll find a number of physical controls on the X10. The top-mounted Mode Dial allows you to toggle between shooting modes, and another dial makes it easy to dial in EV compensation from -2 EV to +2 EV in third-stop increments. The shutter button features a standard thread, which makes it possible to add a soft release button or to use a manually shutter release cable to grab a photo. Rear controls include a 4-Way Command Dial, AE-L/AF-L, and a button to switch from JPG to Raw shooting for a single shot. There is also a standard rear command dial which will adjust aperture in A mode, shutter speed in S mode, and can be used to navigate through menus.

The menu system isn't the most intuitive; in my testing, some of the settings were a bit hard to find. The Raw shooting mode is actually located in the Settings area rather than the Shooting Menu where I'm used to seeing it. Once the initial setup is complete you won't have to spend a lot of time diving into menus?there are enough physical controls so you can avoid that. The X10 also supports a few film emulation modes, including Provia, Velvia, and Astia film stocks as well as a few different black and white shooting modes.

Even though the 2/3-inch image sensor in the X10 is larger than those found in most point-and-shoots, it is smaller than that found in interchangeable lens cameras like the Nikon J1 ($649.95, 3.5 stars), Olympus E-PM1 ($499.99, 4 stars), and our Editors' Choice, the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars)?all of which are similarly priced to the X10. The main reason to opt for a compact over one of these mirrorless shooters is portability. Larger lenses are required to capture enough light to cover larger image sensors, where a compact camera like the X10 is able to get the job done with a much smaller lens. Canon's recently announced G1 X ($799.99) is set to change this a bit, as its sensor is larger than that of a Micro Four Thirds camera, but the camera itself is only slightly larger than the X10.

Taxpayers Finance Rat Condos

Millions of American homeowners face foreclosure, but at least one sort of housing crisis has been remedied: No longer will research rats suffer the indignities of crowded cages.

That is to say that the federal government has ordered labs to provide precisely measured living quarters for all rodents used in federally funded research. Thus, a female rat and her offspring must be housed (for their short, genetically altered lives) in lodgings that feature no less than 124 square inches of floor space and 7 inches of head room. By comparison, a mama mouse and her litter merit a mere 51-inch area. (Space taken up by food bowls, water containers, litter boxes, and toys doesn?t count.)

The new requirements appear in the latest edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (page 57), published by the National Research Council. No such requirements have appeared in previous editions.

Researchers are alarmed, to say the least. According to the National Association for Biomedical Research, the new standards will increase lab costs by hundreds of millions of dollars?chunks of it from taxpayers?thereby detracting from research projects. Scientists also say there?s no evidence that luxury cage space will have any positive effect on Rattus norvegicus.

Alas, the opposition doesn?t faze the folks at the National Research Council, who warn that ?departures from the Guide for reasons of convenience, cost, or other non-animal welfare considerations are not acceptable.?

Jessica Ahlquist, Atheist, Receives Threats Over Prayer Banner Ruling; School Board May Appeal (VIDEO)

Weeks after a judge ordered the removal of a prayer banner at a Rhode Island school, the atheist teen at the center of the controversy continues to receive threats as the school board decides its next move.

Since 2010, Jessica Ahlquist had been urging school officials to remove the banner from the auditorium at Cranston High School West.

The 8-foot banner features a prayer a student wrote in 1963 -- a prayer some consider part of the school's history.

On Jan. 11, federal judge Ronald R. Lagueux ruled it was unconstitutional for the banner to hang at the public school, The New York Times reports.

But the fight to remove the banner has come with consequences for the teen.

Ahlquist has encountered online threats and bullying and has even taken some time off from school, WPRO News reports.

Nevertheless, the 16-year-old says she plans on graduating from Cranston West next year.

Today, the prayer is covered by a tarp, as residents and school board members aren't ready to take the banner down without a fight.

First, the controversial ruling was a popular topic at a Jan. 25 budget meeting, and police even had to be called suppress the crowd, WPRI reports.

Now, a meeting has been scheduled for Feb. 16 during which school officials will hear public comment on the issue, Providence's NBC 10 reports. The board will then decide whether or not to challenge the judge's decision.

Ahlquist, an atheist who grew up Roman Catholic, was not the first to take issue with the presence of the 49-year-old banner.

A family filed a complaint with the American Civil Liberties Union in 2010, though Ahlquist eventually became the spokesperson for the plea and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, according to The New York Times.

At least one religious leader says Ahlquist should be able to stand up for what she believes.

"...We are proud to stand with others in Cranston who desire that Jessica and every young person be encouraged to learn to talk about their differences in peace," Rev. Leigh McCaffrey told Providence's NBC 10.

When the school committee addressed an initial complaint from the ACLU at meeting in August 2010, two religious leaders, a reverend and a rabbi, agreed the banner should be "altered or removed," according to the court document obtained by the Providence Journal.

In March 2011, the committee met again to hear public comments on the issue. Twenty-six adults spoke at the meeting, 24 of whom were in favor of keeping banner. Even one speaker who described himself as an atheist threatened to "assemble a group of people to surround the school and protect the Mural," if the ACLU took down the banner, the document states.

At the end of the meeting, committee member Michael Traficante announced the decision to keep the banner in its current state. Later that month, the committee decided to place an explanation next to the banner, detailing its decision to keep the prayer without alteration for "historic and cultural reasons."

The ACLU formally filed suit on April 4, 2011.

The prayer reads as follows:

Our Heavenly Father,

Grant us each day the desire to do our best,
To grow mentally and morally as well as physically,
To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers,
To be honest with ourselves as well as with others,
Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win,
Teach us the value of true friendship,
Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West.

Amen

Sheryl Sandberg on Facebook Culture: It?s in the Posters

valley girlFor the latest episode of her Valley Girl web show, Jesse Draper (daughter of venture capitalist Tim Draper) managed to score an interview with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. For the first half of the interview, Sandberg talks about her work-life balance and her desire to see women in high-profile executive roles ? it's engaging and informal, though it largely covers the same ground as the New Yorker's profile of Sandberg last year.

Pockets of Internet go dark to protest piracy bills (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Wikipedia, the world's free online encyclopedia, went dark on Wednesday and other Internet players including Google put black censorship bars on portions of their websites in protest of pending U.S. legislation designed to curb online piracy.

The unusual protest was visible across the Internet in many forms on Wednesday, with dozens of commercial and non-profit websites either closing down for the day or urging visitors to oppose what had until recently been a relatively obscure and technical legislative proposal.

Internet companies aim to get U.S. lawmakers to back off of bills designed to shut down access to overseas websites that traffic in stolen content or counterfeit goods.

The effort has gained traction. The White House over the weekend warned that overly broad legislation could harm free speech, and on Wednesday, House Speaker John Boehner acknowledged there was a lack of consensus on the bills.

Several members of Congress said the legislation appeared stalled, with some reversing earlier support for the measures.

The legislation, known as SOPA in the U.S. House of Representatives and PIPA in the Senate, has been a major priority for entertainment companies, publishers, pharmaceutical companies and many industry groups, who say it is critical to curbing online piracy that costs them billions of dollars a year.

But Internet players argue the bills would undermine innovation and free speech rights and compromise the functioning of the Internet.

"Something this big - which looks to be the largest and most prolific online protest ever in the short history of the Internet - that's bound to get the attention of lawmakers across the board," said Jeffrey Silva, an analyst at Medley Global Advisors.

Wikipedia mounted a 24-hour protest starting at midnight by converting their English page to shadowy black background and warning readers that "the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet."

It included a link to help Internet users contact their representatives.

Craigslist, the free Internet classifieds site, also went black in protest, while Google's home search page included a black bar slapped over its logo, and asked readers: "Tell Congress: Please don't censor the web!"

Smaller sites, such as Reddit.com and BoingBoing.net, were also dark, with BoingBoing noting that the proposed anti-piracy bills "would put us in legal jeopardy if we linked to a site anywhere online that had links to copyright infringement."

Bill Allison, editorial director at the Sunlight Foundation, a lobbying watchdog group, said the Internet companies' 24-hour boycott was an effective campaign.

"It's a way of engaging the public in something that had been a very much behind closed doors kind of business as usual in Washington thing. It's a way to get the public aware and alerted to it, and somewhat on their side," Allison said.

MOMENTUM COOLS

The bills were seemingly on track for approval by Congress, but sentiment has shifted in recent weeks and an implicit veto threat from the White House has cast doubt on whether legislation will pass.

Republican Representative Tom Price, head of the House Republican Policy Committee, said in a hallway interview, "I don't think it is going anywhere."

"There is real confusion about it, number one, but number two, there are real concerns about whether or not it would it would shutdown the ability of entrepreneurs, new businesses and the like to utilize the Internet for their purposes," Price said.

When asked about the anti-piracy legislation at a news conference on Wednesday, Boehner said lawmakers will continue to try to find support for it, but that it's not there now.

"It's pretty clear to many of us that there is a lack of consensus at this point," Boehner said.

STAYING ON THE SIDELINES

Big tech names including Facebook and Twitter declined to participate in a boycott despite their opposition to the legislation.

The companies were not prepared to sacrifice a day's worth of revenue and risk the ire of users for a protest whose impact on lawmakers would be hard to gauge.

Google's solution allows the search engine giant to keep revenue attached to its searches, while still highlighting the issue.

The protest drew some criticism ahead of its launch.

"This publicity stunt does a disservice to its users by promoting fear instead of facts," Lamar Smith, Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a sponsor of SOPA, said in a statement on Tuesday. "Perhaps during the blackout, Internet users can look elsewhere for an accurate definition of online piracy."

Former Senator Chris Dodd, who now chairs the Motion Picture Association of America, labeled the blackout a "gimmick" and called for its supporters to "stop the hyperbole and PR stunts and engage in meaningful efforts to combat piracy."

Authorities say missing Montana teacher is dead (AP)

HELENA, Mont. ? Authorities said Friday that two men in the Dakotas were being questioned in connection with the death of a Montana math teacher who vanished last weekend when she left her house for a run.

Sidney police Chief Frank DiFonzo said a 47-year-old man was in custody in the Williams County jail in North Dakota, while a 22-year-old man was being questioned in Rapid City, S.D. He did not identify them and declined to answer questions about the investigation.

Sidney Public School officials posted a statement online saying they learned of Sherry Arnold's death Friday morning. The statement did not provide details.

"I think we are starting to find some closure in the whole deal," said Sidney Mayor Bret Smelser, who knew Arnold and her parents well. "The news is not good, and as far as I know we don't have a body yet."

FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson, of Salt Lake City, said a tip from the public led to the two men. The FBI hasn't confirmed Arnold's death.

The popular 43-year-old teacher from the oil boom town of Sidney near the North Dakota border had been missing since last Saturday morning. The only clue to her disappearance that had been publicly released was that one of her shoes was found along her running route.

Authorities had been investigating the possibility Arnold was abducted.

Karen Arnold Truax of St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Sherry Arnold's husband, Gary, told The Billings Gazette the family wants some privacy and "time to process what has happened."

"We appreciate everything that everyone did to help us in this search. We are so heartbroken that this is the outcome," Truax said. "We just sincerely appreciate all the love and support that continues to come from the community."

Both Sherry and Gary Arnold were employees of the Sidney school system and have five children combined from prior marriages, according to the Gazette. Two live at home and attend the same school system where Sherry Arnold worked for the past 18 years.

Hundreds of residents, police, firefighters and others combed the town and surrounding countryside earlier this week. The school district provided buses to transport members of search teams and set up a fund to defer expenses.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx hands-on (video)

Its showing wasn't as noteworthy as it was last year, but Motorola still at least brought a few new goodies to put on display. The latest major addition to Verizon's Droid Razr family, the Razr Maxx, was on hand, as were the white and purple variants of the original version. So what makes the $300 subsidized Maxx so different from its predecessor? Simply enough, the name is a direct reflection of the phone's battery life, as it sports a thicker (translating to a thickness of 8.99mm, a couple millimeters thicker than the original) 3,300 mAh juicepack that promises an out-of-this-world 21 hour talk time. Sadly, we didn't have 21 full hours to dedicate to testing this claim, but we did have enough time to get a few pictures and a video of the entire Droid Razr family together at last below the break.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

Actress Heather Locklear in hospital after 911 call (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "Melrose Place" actress Heather Locklear was taken to the hospital on Thursday after emergency services were called to her home near Los Angeles, police said.

The Sheriff's department in Ventura County, west of Los Angeles said that emergency services responded to a 911 call from Locklear's home and "determined that she needed to be transported to the hospital for further medical attention."

Representatives of the actress did not return calls for comment but celebrity websites TMZ and RadarOnline said Locklear may have mixed prescription drugs and alcohol.

Locklear, who also appeared in the TV comedy "Spin City" has a history of depression, spending time in rehab in 2008.

The actress was married to rock star Tommy Lee and later Richie Sambora in the 1990s. In 2007 she began dating fellow "Melrose Place" actor Jack Wagner but their engagement was called off two months ago.

UK government to review racist killers' sentences (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's top legal officer will review the sentences given to the killers of black British teenager Stephen Lawrence amid criticism they are too lenient.

The office of Attorney General Dominic Grieve says he will examine the prison sentences after a request from a member of the public.

On Wednesday a judge sentenced David Norris and Gary Dobson to a minimum of 14 and 15 years in prison respectively for Lawrence's 1993 stabbing death. Because they were under 18 at the time, they were sentenced as teenagers rather than adults.

An adult convicted of a knife murder could expect to get at least 30 years.

Lawrence was attacked by a racist gang as he waited for a bus, in a case that shocked the country and exposed incompetence and racism within London's police force.

Sunni lawmakers keep up Iraqi parliament boycott

Lawmakers from Iraq's largest Sunni-backed bloc stood by their boycott of parliament when the assembly reconvened Tuesday after a two-week break ? another reminder of the deepening political crisis that has revived the country's sectarian tensions.

The Iraqiya bloc is also considering a pullout from the ruling coalition to protest an arrest warrant by Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government for the country's top Sunni politician, Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi. Iraqiya lawmakers accuse al-Maliki of hoarding power and want a greater role in governance, particularly over decisions involving state security forces.

"We will keep boycotting until they fulfill our demands of authentic partnership and stop marginalizing Iraqiya," Sunni lawmaker Ahmed al-Mesari said.

Iraqiya suspended its participation in parliament on Dec. 18 ? the same day the last American troops left Iraq at the end of a nearly nine-year war ? to protest the control of key posts by al-Maliki.

Al-Hashemi, a member of Iraqiya, remains holed up in Iraq's northern Kurdish region. He is accused of running a hit squad targeting government officials ? charges he denies and says are politically motivated.

In another indication of the growing sectarian tensions in Iraq, Kurdish lawmakers briefly walked out of the first parliamentary session of 2012, saying they were upset because Shiite lawmaker Hussein al-Asadi criticized Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, the country's senior Kurdish politician, for sheltering al-Hashemi. They later agreed to rejoin the session.

While officially a guest of his Kurdish boss, Talabani, al-Hashemi's presence in the semiautonomous northern Kurdish region effectively puts him out of reach of security forces under al-Maliki's control. The Kurdish region is part of Iraq but has its own security forces. The Iraqi army and national police do not operate there.

The political crisis threatens to further destabilize Iraqi politics and security just weeks after the last U.S. combat troops left the country.

Iraq was controlled by the minority Sunnis under Saddam until the U.S.-led war that began in 2003 ousted him. The country's majority Shiites have dominated the government since Saddam's ouster, though the U.S. has pushed hard for the inclusion of Sunnis and Kurds with a meaningful role in the governing coalition.

Al-Maliki has threatened to form a government without al-Hashemi's Sunni-backed political party, though he would likely need to retain the support of the Kurdish bloc to hold onto power.

As parliament convened Tuesday, Iraq's Interior Ministry ? which al-Maliki controls ? announced it had arrested a ring of 21 Sunni insurgents allegedly involved in attacks in Baghdad.

Deputy Interior Minister Adnan al-Asadi said the cell is linked to Saddam Hussein's outlawed Baath party and was responsible for about 300 attacks against government employees and security forces.

The alleged leader of the cell, Abdul-Khaliq Abdul-Sattar, told a news conference organized by the ministry that he received orders from Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the highest ranking member of Saddam's ousted regime still at large.

Justin Bieber isn't new to creating holiday songs using his new-millennium, R&B swagger, as evidenced on his Christmas album, Under The Mistletoe. And this weekend, he gave New Year's a try. The singer tweeted a New Year's-themed track, "Happy New Year," which features his pal Jaden Smith rapping.

The slow jam is certainly swaggerfied but also reflective, featuring lyrics that both play up the singer's pop-star image and look ahead to a more hopeful year. "I'm gonna make your cheeks red when I kiss your neck/Girl I'm never leavin' 'cause you are the best baby," he sings. "I wanna give you everything/Never feel 'cause girl you're coming home with me."

In a spoken breakdown, he says, "2012 is the year to be better, stronger and closer to the people around you. So grab someone special, and just, you know."

Smith also shows some bad-boy personality and proves that rapping runs in the Smith DNA. He raps, " 'Cause 2012 is the year of the love/And we gon' start it off/We can get a plane today and get a car toma'/We don't do it small at all/No girl tell me what I gotta to do/I can be the beat that you rockin' to/I can do anything, nothing is impossible, especially with you girl/And I never need a new girl/This love is true girl/Aye welcome to the crew girl."

Not only was Bieber gracing fans with new tracks over the weekend, but he also took the stage during "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2012" in Times Square, not far from where his lady love Selena Gomez was hosting "NYE in NYC 2012." The twosome later partied together at Glass House, E! News reports.

A source says, "He...danced with Selena, showing off, picking her up and swinging her around like it was 'Dancing With the Stars.' "

Bieber recently debuted another track"Be Alright," during his holiday special, "Justin Bieber: Home For The Holidays." He's expected to drop his new album, Believe, later this year.
