Green Blog: A Milestone Looms for Farm-Raised Fish

Sometime this year, we will quietly pass a milestone in human history: the majority of the fish we eat will be farm-raised rather than wild-caught.

In the last 20 years, the production of fish through aquaculture has grown exponentially, while marine fish catches have leveled off. Unless it?s an extraordinary year for marine fishing, in 2013 the lines will cross, and the majority of the fish we eat will come from aquaculture rather than oceans.

Fishing is the only part of global food production in which the tillers and the breeders of the world are not dominant, and this year, the last stronghold of the hunter-gatherers will be eclipsed, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization?s 2012 State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture report.

This is not to suggest that the approximately 45 million people who fish for a living are headed to the history books sometime soon. Fishing is likely to continue to have a large work force even as overharvested wild fish stock in many parts of the world decline and the job itself remains one of the most dangerous.

The reason, as several recent studies show, is that fishing is a ?sticky? occupation. One study found that as years of fishing experience increases, so does job satisfaction and the unwillingness to leave the occupation. In another study, people in the Pacific Island nation of Kiribati were provided with a government subsidy for coconut production as a tool to reduce fishing pressure, and the result was the exact opposite. The extra income from coconuts gave them more time to do what they wanted, which was fishing.

Fishing remains one of the few occupations that people will pay money to do in their leisure time.

While commercial fishing will continue regardless of the growth in aquaculture, it is aquaculture that holds more promise for addressing the Malthusian dilemma of feeding a human population expected to increase by 50% over the next 50 years.

One reason is that aquaculture is the most efficient producer of animal protein. Feed conversion ratios for several aquaculture fish species are approaching 1:1, meaning that for every pound of feed, a fish gains one pound. By comparison, the most efficient farmed animals on land are broiler chickens with a 1.6:1 feed conversion ratio. (One reason is that with a few exceptions like bluefin tuna, fish are coldblooded and thus use less energy than poultry, beef cows and hogs.)

Aquaculture is not without problems, however. The effluents from aquaculture ponds can pollute nearby waters and cause severe oxygen depletion, or eutrophication.

Shrimp aquaculture in particular has caused swaths of mangrove forests to be cleared for shrimp ponds in a number of countries, and this loss of ?green infrastructure? has made these coastal areas more vulnerable to storms and diminished the local ?fish nurseries? that mangroves provide.

Disease in aquaculture is also a problem. Widespread outbreaks of disease occur almost every year, and the overuse of antibiotics and pesticides in aquaculture is a growing issue. Trace amounts of antibiotics and pesticides can remain in some aquaculture products.

To help ensure food safety and sustainability of aquaculture products, third-party certification systems like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Global Aquaculture Alliance-Best Aquaculture Practices are growing in popularity, especially among large buyers of aquaculture products like supermarket chains.

We?ve had 12,000 years of learning in agriculture and 60 years in large-scale aquaculture. There is still much that is unknown about domesticating fish and shellfish. But what?s clear is that the shift from foraging to farming is almost complete.

In another century, never-say-quit fishermen and dumpster-diving Freegans may be the only hunter-gatherers left.

Oatmeal Bubble Tea at Tenren's | ireallylikefood

Oatmeal Bubble Tea at Tenren's

I recently visited Tenren's Tea Shop since I was in Chinatown and was killing time since I had to wait for my friends to go to dinner. Tenren's had a long and new line of drinks, so I decided to try one of them.

I got the Oatmeal Milk Iced Tea ($3.00). I initially wanted a lavender tea, but they only make it hot. The oatmeal milk iced tea wasn't anything special nor did it scream "WOW" to me.

?

It tasted just like a regular milk iced tea. The only difference is there's oatmeal instead of tapioca balls inside. This drink was a bit of a let-down. I imagined that maybe the oatmeal milk iced tea would taste like oatmeal.

?

Would I ever order this again?? Probably not, since it turned out to not be what I expected. I rather invest my $3.00 on a bubble tea where the flavors are true to the name of it.

?

Would you try the oatmeal bubble tea? Have you ever tried a food/drink that you regretted?

Former NFL football player Erxleben arrested in Ponzi scheme

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) - Former college All-American and National Football League kicker Russell Erxleben was arrested by federal agents on Thursday at his home near Austin, Texas on federal fraud charges.

Erxleben, 56, was charged in a federal indictment unsealed on Thursday with five counts of wire fraud, one count of securities fraud and two counts of money laundering.

In 1999, he was convicted of securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and was sentenced to 84 months in prison.

This time, Erxleben was charged with setting up several companies and soliciting investors in a scheme to buy post-World War One German government gold bearer bonds and a painting by French artist Paul Gauguin.

Instead, Erxleben used investor money for himself and to pay dividends to previous investors, a classic Ponzi scheme, said Darrell Fields, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas.

"Erxleben made various wire transfers using numerous financial accounts which were opened and maintained by others, including family members, in an effort to avoid detection," Fields said.

The scheme generated more than $2 million, Fields said. Erxleben still owes $28 million in restitution from his previous fraud conviction, Fields said.

Erxleben is also charged with failing to disclose to his new investors his role in the 1999 conviction.

Erxleben was an All-American kicker for the University of Texas in the 1970s, where he kicked the longest field goal in college football history, 67 yards. He was drafted in the first round in 1977 by the New Orleans Saints, where he played for six seasons.

Erxleben will remain in federal custody pending a detention hearing set for next week, Fields said.

Welcome Fortune Through Your Front Door - Feng Shui Weekly

Posted on 20. Jan, 2013 by admin in Feng Shui Home - Doorways, Feng Shui Tips

Front Door 189x300 Welcome Fortune Through Your Front DoorWelcome to my Feng Shui weekly blog post. This week I continue to provide answers to some of the common Feng Shui questions I get asked on my workshops and training courses. This week, Where do I start on my Feng Shui journey?

This is one of the most common questions when people start to focus on how to incorporate Feng Shui principles in to the home. The foundation stones of Feng Shui, the two absolutes that you must get right if you are to attract good fortune to your home and attract what you desire to your life are balance and energy flow. But achieving a home that is balanced and has a positive flow of energy takes a while to achieve. It is not something that can be done overnight so if you want to attract good fortune to your life right now where do you start?

Because people often don?t know where to start they add Feng Shui cures and enhancements in specific places in their home which correspond to what they feel are areas which are lacking in their life. If for instance they are experiencing problems in a relationship they add enhancements to the bedroom or the south west area of the home. Whilst there is nothing fundamentally wrong with doing this I always think that if you want to make life changing enhancements to your home you should approach it as a journey and have a plan. I always suggest that when you begin to incorporate Feng Shui to your home you start with ensuring that there is a strong and positive flow energy around the space The front door is where energy enters your home and so for me this is a logical place to start. The great news is that it is also one of the simplest and quickest areas of your home to get right.

Below are some tips for ensuring that the entrance to your home is ready to welcome and nurture a positive flow of energy. If you follow these tips you should very quickly start to see small improvements happening in your life which will give you the impetus to continue making changes in other areas around your home.

Tip 1

Make sure the entrance to your home is free of clutter. Outside your home ensure that the entrance is not blocked by dustbins, bikes and old plant pots and ensure plants and shrubs are trimmed back and kept neat and away from the door. On the inside coats and shoes should be stored neatly and there should be a clear path from the door to the rest of the house. The door should be able to open fully without anything impeding it?s progress.

Tip 2

Make sure that the doorway is kept in good repair. Doors should be kept regularly varnished or painted and hinges should be well oiled so that they don?t squeak. Solid doors are better than doors with glass. If you have a glass door the glass should be kept clean and consider covering the inside of the door with a thick curtain to ensure that energy, once it has entered is kept within the home.

Tip 3

If you want to attract good fortune to your home consider painting your front door an auspicious colour. The Chinese believe that red is the best colour for a door but this is only true if the front door of your home faces south. If your front door faces east green is a great colour as this will signify new growth and opportunities. If your front door faces north paint it black or dark blue as this will help attract money and new work opportunities to the home. Finally yellow is the most auspicious colour of all as this will help to attract luck, good fortune and abundance.

Tip 4

Make a welcoming front entrance by adding bright shrubs at either side of your door, placing a welcome mat and hanging a wind chime, crystal or bell. Moving enhancements such as wind chimes and bells have the extra advantage of stimulating energy, ensuring a strong flow through your door.

Tip 5

Make sure the entranceway to your home is well illuminated. If the doorway is dark then this could lead to energy stagnating around the door rather than flowing through. Place an outside light or lights just outside your doorway and if your door opens on to a narrow hall paint the hall a light colour and make sure that any lights in the hall are bright and illuminate the whole space.

I hope that this week?s blog post has provided you with some quick and simple remedies for ensuring that your home attracts a strong and positive flow of energy. If you would like to receive these tips direct to your inbox every week please sign up for my mailing list at the top of this page.

EPA proposes compromise on Navajo Generating Station's emissions

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing regulations to reduce emissions from the massive Navajo Generating Station by as much as 84%, in a compromise that would give the plant's operators more time to install scrubbers and would ease the economic impact on two Native American tribes.

Situated in northern Arizona, less than 20 miles from the Grand Canyon, the generating station is the source of haze viewed by tourists at nearly a dozen parks and wilderness areas in the Southwest.

The EPA's proposed rules would allow the 2,250-megawatt plant until 2023 to install pollution controls to meet emissions standards mandated by a Regional Haze Rule. The plant is one of the largest sources of harmful nitrogen oxide emissions in the country, but the agency is proposing to add five years to the compliance date in response to concerns by Navajo and Hopi tribes, EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld said.

"It's a deserving compromise, given the real economic threats that face the tribal nations," Blumenfeld said, calling the issue the most complicated he'd ever dealt with. "We wanted to provide enough time to work out the economics so that the facility remains open."

The coal-fired power plant is on land leased from the Navajo Reservation and burns coal mined on both the Navajo and Hopi reservations. The equipment required to bring the plant into emissions compliance would cost an estimated $500 million, and the tribes and a number of groups argued that the economic burden might cause the operators to close the facility, which employs hundreds of tribal members.

The generating station is co-owned by several entities, including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Blumenfeld said the EPA proposed extending the compliance period also in recognition that the plant's operators had previously installed emission-reducing equipment. When the plant is in compliance, its emissions will total no more than 28,500 tons per year.

"For 90% of the year, the Grand Canyon's air quality is impaired by a veil of pollution haze that reduces the pristine natural visual range by an average of more than 30%," Blumenfeld said in a statement.

National parks and wilderness areas are required to maintain Class I airsheds ? the highest level of clear skies. In addition to the Grand Canyon, nearby parks include Zion, Bryce Canyon, Mesa Verde, Arches and Canyonlands.

The plant also provides the power that drives the Central Arizona Project, an expansive aqueduct system that provides water to much of Arizona. State agencies had petitioned the EPA to consider the proposed rules' effect on the cost of water delivery.

The proposed regulations are open to a 90-day comment period.

5 steps to giving effective feedback ? Business Management Daily ...

You give instructions, but people don?t follow your lead. The solution is to prepare so that you provide supportive, timely coaching.

Rushing to give feedback rarely pays off. Follow these five steps to pave the way for effective coaching:

  1. Know what matters most. Isolate the most important issue and focus on it as you begin the conversation. Don?t let extraneous concerns interfere. In addition to defining what matters most, think through why it matters and what outcome you want to produce as a result of your coaching.
  2. Check your motivation. Ideally, you want to coach from a position of support with a genuine eagerness to enhance a staffer?s performance. If you feel angry or resentful?or you lack confidence and that makes you defensive?then you may alienate the person you?re trying to instruct.
  3. Support your main point. Before you make an assertion about an em??ployee?s performance, be ready to cite an example or two. That allows you to begin the coaching session by identifying the core issue and adding, ?Here?s an example.?
  4. Pick the best time. Attempting to coach when either you or the employee is tired, distracted or aggrieved can sabotage your success. Confirm that the listener is receptive to your message?and that you can concentrate on delivering it without interruption.
  5. Establish a back-and-forth rhythm. To avoid talking too much, stop after every few sentences and let the em??ployee chime in. This helps you monitor whether your comments hit the mark.

In partnership with EchoLight Studios, a world-class Christian film ...

Partnership with EchoLight Studios will Give Liberty University Filmmakers Wide Exposure

Partnership with EchoLight Studios will Give Liberty University Filmmakers Wide Exposure

Lynchburg, Va. (PRWEB) January 15, 2013

Equipped with the latest, cutting-edge filmmaking technology and in partnership with?EchoLight Studios, a world-class Christian film studio, the?Cinematic Arts?program at Liberty University is prepared to become a major force in the filmmaking industry.

The new partnership includes a five-year, multimillion-dollar agreement wherein EchoLight will finance, produce, and handle worldwide distribution for five full-length feature films in collaboration with Liberty Motion Pictures.

?The Liberty Cinematic Arts program already is known for state-of-the-art equipment, hands-on filmmaking, experienced faculty, and a rare commitment to storytelling,? said Stephan Schultze, Cinematic Arts Center executive director. ?Even among film schools, this is an amazing new level: a promise to the Liberty Cinematic Arts program that its best work has distribution on a worldwide stage.?

LibertyLiberty announced plans to form a film school in May 2011 with the mission of training the next generation of filmmakers in a Christian environment. A?dedication and film festival?was held in Fall 2012 to celebrate the first full academic year.

The program offers a two-year, full-immersion cohort experience for students in their junior and senior years and has already exceeded enrollment goals.

Bobby Downes, EchoLight president and co-founder, calls Liberty?s program unprecedented.

?For the first time in history, we see the world?s largest Christian university equip students called to the cinematic arts with state-of-the-art tools and resources.?

The bridge between his company and the university, Downes said, is ?an investment in the future great artists we?ll see affect culture and society over the next decade. History is a showcase of storytellers? tremendous impact on society.?

Alex Kendrick, a pioneer of the Christian film industry and director of ?Courageous,? ?Facing the Giants,? and ?Fireproof? (the highest-grossing independent film of 2008), said the agreement propels an already promising program.

?Christians want to create meaningful entertainment, and there?s no shortage of families hungry for those movies,? Kendrick said. ?Liberty?s Cinematic Arts Center was made for a time such as this, to train and guide the next generation of storytellers using film. EchoLight Studios? commitment to finance and provide leadership will help Liberty students fulfill the Great Commission.?

So unique and attractive is the relationship with EchoLight, Schultze said, that he expects to see more industry professionals like Kendrick step in, wanting to give back as teachers, mentors, and advisers.

As Liberty embarks on this venture, EchoLight is a perfect partner. Based in Dallas, Texas, it formed in 2011 and has been groundbreaking in its own right, paving the way to make more quality movies for families of faith.

In 2012, EchoLight began releasing one movie per month, including Josh McDowell?s ?Undaunted,? Mike Norris? (son of Chuck Norris) ?I Am Gabriel,? and Corbin Bernsen?s ?25 Hill? and ?3 Day Test.?

In 2013, EchoLight has slated to release Paul Stehlik?s ?Seasons Of Gray? and Clayton Miller and Chad Gundersen?s ?Redemption,? starring ?Fireproof?s? Erin Bethea.

?The Potential Inside,? an award-winning film produced and directed by Scotty Curlee, assistant professor of cinematic arts at Liberty and a Liberty alumnus, will also be released by EchoLight in 2013.

Christopher Morrow, EchoLight?s chief global strategist and co-founder, said the firm was formed ?to do it all ? to finance, produce, and distribute ? to reach people in all the ways they watch movies wherever they are in the world.?

Their mission aligns with Liberty?s vision: to Train Champions for Christ and give them a solid platform to take their message worldwide.

With access to first-class online editing facilities, nine state-of-the-art RED digital cameras, and the only THX certified sound mixing stage on the East Coast, students of Liberty?s Cinematic Arts Center are fully outfitted to create top-quality films on campus.

Young filmmakers are learning to break down and analyze films, to create and write screenplays, and to master all technical aspects of filmmaking through the school?s ?learn by doing? approach.

?We?re seeing a one-of-a-kind incubator for the next generation of Christian filmmakers,? Schultze said. ?What a time, what an open door to turn life-changing stories into life-changing films.?

Every graduate of Liberty?s Cinematic Arts program will leave the school with a completed screenplay, a business plan to market and fund it, a short film they have written and directed, and real-world career experience, including a feature film credit and work with industry veterans.

This fall the program will have 70 students and is expected to grow to 200 by 2015.

?Liberty is inviting potential filmmakers to ?change chairs,?? Schultze said. ?This is a real opportunity for film fans to get out of their theater seats and into the director?s chair. The real winners will be millions of audience members longing for high-quality films that reflect their values.?

Liberty University, located in Lynchburg, Va., is the world?s largest Christian university. Nearly 100,000 students attend classes on its 6,800-acre residential campus and study in its thriving?online education?program.

Bulgaria Loses EUR 51 M in EU Agriculture Funds - Business ...

Bulgaria has left EUR 51 M of EU funds for agriculture unabsorbed in 2012, and this amount will be substracted from its funds for the next programing period.

This was announced Wednesday at a press event by Bulgarian State Agriculture Fund director Rumen Pozhoranov.

Bulgaria has absorbed EUR 381 M from the?European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD)?s EUR 431 M allotted for 2010.

The payment of funds on EAFRD is two years after the approval of the budget.

This means that on this instrument, Bulgaria has a 88% rate of absorption for 2012.

According to Pozhoranov, one of the main reasons for less than optimal absorption is that the program for Bulgaria started two years later.

The main area with deficient absroption is the so-called axis 2, comprising ?environmental measures? to be implemented by agriculture producers.

Donald Trump slams GOP: How would he have struck 'fiscal cliff' deal?

Donald Trump slams GOP in tweets, saying that Republicans got nothing in the fiscal cliff deal. Here's a look at some principles the real estate mogul might have followed had he been negotiating.

?Does any Republican have the ability to negotiate?? tweeted the apparently exasperated real estate mogul/reality-show star after the House passed the cliff compromise and sent it to President Obama.

?Obama and the Democrats are laughing at the deal they just made ... the Republicans got nothing!? Mr. Trump judged.

OK then. Perhaps the former front-runner for the GOP nomination ? albeit one who never actually flung his hair into the ring ? could have done better. What principles would someone who wrote a book called ?The Art of the Deal? have followed in pursuing cliff-avoidance legislation?

First, he?d have thought big. ?Think big? is one of the ?Trump cards? he listed in his 1987 book, after all.

Presumably that means he would have preferred the grand-bargain approach ? one in which both looming tax hikes and budget cuts would have been avoided; Medicare, Social Security, and other entitlements reformed; the tax code scrubbed of loopholes, and the nation generally put on a fiscal path toward deficit elimination.

?[O]nly the big deal should be approved!? he tweeted back on Dec. 28.

Good luck with that. The problem here is that running the country is different from designing hotel lobbies. There are so many political participants with so many different points of view that lately, it?s amazing if they can agree what day it is. Mr. Obama and House Speaker John Boehner have tried twice now to strike a grand bargain, and they failed. Perhaps President Trump would have done better in that regard; we doubt it.

Second, Trump would have ?used his leverage,? in another Trump card phrase. ?The worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is seem desperate to make it,? Trump wrote back in 1987.

Of course, that means he might have urged Speaker Boehner to pretend that he?d be just fine with going over the cliff. The problem with that is it would have been difficult for the GOP to shrug off raising taxes on all Americans, right? Also, Republicans aren't going to be able to pretend they are OK with deep cuts in the Pentagon budget. Move along.

In other words, the GOP had little leverage to use in this instance. That was one of Boehner?s fundamental problems.

A third 1987 Trump card he might have invoked: ?have fun.? Gather everybody in the cabinet room for pizza and a screening of ?The Hobbit.? Play charades and make Sen. Mitch McConnell act out the word ?sequester.? Stuff like that.

OK, maybe that would have helped. But given an atmosphere in which Boehner was accosting Senate majority leader Harry Reid in the White House and using very bad language because Senator Reid had publicly criticized the GOP leadership ? well, having fun wasn?t in the cards.

Perhaps Trump was just angry because he?s one of those billionaires whose taxes have just gone up. But if this deal is so bad, why is Wall Street so happy? The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 200 points at the opening bell Wednesday. Presumably Trump owns a few stocks. So far, this deal is making him money.

GameStick brings a new Android game console to your TV, fits inside its own controller video

OUYA likely won't be the only Android-based game console in town this spring. PlayJam is going beyond its smart TV roots to build the GameStick, a TV-based system that fits into a shell not much bigger than a typical flash drive -- it's small enough that the finished version should stow inside its own Bluetooth gamepad and draw power from the HDMI port, like Roku's Streaming Stick. The Jelly Bean system's dual-core Amlogic processor isn't as powerful as the Tegra 3 in the OUYA, but it should also lead to a slightly more tempting $79 price. PlayJam's remaining challenge is the familiar one of reaching a crowdfunding target: the company says it needs $100,000 to go through its last development hurdles and ship the production GameStick in April. If the firm makes its goal, however, the low-cost gaming world will be delightfully crowded this year.

The Evolution of Communication Technology - IP Phone Warehouse ...

The text message just celebrated its 20th birthday. Although texting wasn?t prevalent immediately, it sure did take off. According to Forrester Research, six billion SMS messages are sent each day.

The reason behind the success of the text message is its simplicity and wide access. Any cell phone can send and receive text messages, which makes it more widely used, and it requires very little data so it can be effectively used even in areas with limited cell coverage.

However, even with the climb of popularity the text message has experienced, it?s expected to slow down and eventually lose its hold on consumers. Why? Although the infrastructure is set up and costs next-to-nothing to?maintain, many carriers still charge up to $0.20/message. Which, of course, begs the question: ?What?s next??

Many people think the next big thing will be video conferencing, but the main issues are still accessibility and interoperability. For general users, the cost alone is prohibitive for most video conferencing solutions, which drives home users and even many business users to take advantage of free, or low-cost solutions such as Google Chat or Skype. However, the features, security and quality are severely lacking for use in many business applications. The major players in the video conferencing game have been making strides to ensure interoperability with professional systems and those using Skype and other mainstream video chat solutions.
Polycom CloudAXIS
Polycom?s RealPresence CouldAXIS Suite is a browser-based video collaboration system that addresses concerns of interoperability and security, allowing users of various platforms to connect to CloudAXIS users. The system is not out quite yet, but will be available in March 2013. CloudAXIS may not be for everyone, however, since it does not support rich media or content-sharing, and video?quality?is low when compared to HD video communications systems (due, in part, to most users being limited by low-quality webcams), but is designed for business-to-consumer communications and large-to-small business communications.

However, it?s difficult to predict if video will truly be the next ?big thing? in communications. No one was predicting, 20 years ago, that the text message was going to take the world by storm like it did. Before the text, it was the telephone, which was another universal, easy-to-use system that connected everyone to each other. The universality, ease-of-use and simple concept in something that video conferencing is trying to?achieve. By taking the step to provide secure, business-level communication to every user, CloudAXIS is certainly approaching ?universal? in a constructive way. ?Polycom, as well as other video conferencing developers such as LifeSize, have been dedicated to using standards-based solutions for interoperability with other large systems. Opening the door to users of consumer-level solutions offers a greater advantage by providing a way to communicate with more people, particularly users with no real need for a larger system.
