Column: Mickelson solves links golf puzzle at Open

GULLANE, Scotland (AP) -- His coach was all business before the round. His caddie was in tears afterward. Only Phil Mickelson seemed to know how many magical moments he was capable of unfurling in between.

"I said, "Even-par or 1 under could win this thing.' He said, 'I'm going to be better than that,'" coach Butch Harmon recalled.

Harmon was standing near the 18th green in the fast-fading light of a cool Scottish summer afternoon. The roars from one of the great closing rounds in major championship golf was still ringing in his ears. He paused long enough to crack a wide smile.

"He wasn't lying."

Little more than 10 yards away, just after exiting the front door of the Muirfield clubhouse, caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay was still trying to regain his composure.

Someone asked about the tears he kept choking back. Instead, they started falling again.

"Because," Mackay began, then turned away for nearly a half-minute. "When you work with someone for so many years, it's pretty cool when you see him play the best round of golf he's ever played in the last round of the British Open."

This was the one major championship Mickelson never thought he could win. He came out on tour in 1992 oozing talent, a prodigy who won his first pro tournament while still in college, only to become another golfer once labeled the "next Nicklaus" who couldn't break through in a major. Mickelson was 0-for-42 in that department and a dozen years into an otherwise stellar career when he finally won the Masters in 2004.

Another major came the next year at the PGA Championship. Then two more at the Masters. Along the way, he collected a record six runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open, the last just a month ago at Merion Golf Club, when Englishman Justin Rose zoomed by him on the final few holes.

Those were heartbreaks, to be sure, but at least Mickelson knew he had a shot on any golf course where booming drives and sky-high lob shots could decide the outcome. Despite playing on this side of the Atlantic for 20 years, though, he struggled trying to keep the ball under the wind and his temperament in check whenever he got a crazy bounce -- and there were dozens of those.

For the longest time, links golf appeared to be one puzzle he was never going to unlock.

"It's been the last eight or nine years I've started to playing it more effectively, I've started to hit the shots more effectively," Mickelson said. "But even then it's so different than what I grew up playing. I always wondered if I would develop the skills needed to win this championship.

"And to finally capture this," he added a moment later, referring to the claret jug he was holding, "it feels really, really good."

Just last week, 3 1/2 hours drive up the coast from here, he won the Scottish Open, his first-ever win on the continent. But Castle Stuart wasn't a true links, and even an opening-round 69 across the fast, firm ground here failed to erase nearly two decades of doubt -- especially when Mickelson complained about the condition of the course afterward.

But Mackay saw things differently.

"When he got to 18 on Thursday, he hit the best shot he hit all day and then three-putted. I think that kind of reinforces that stuff happens over here that you really can't control," Mackay said. "That you're going to hit good shots and it's not going to work out, and you suck it up and you move on.

"And the tournament could have gotten away from him, too, in the fairway bunker on 15 yesterday. And he didn't let it, you know what I mean? Suck it up and move on. That's what he did. He was just in a great place all week."

Yet if Mickelson was going to crack, the place and time to do it Sunday would have been at the par-3 16th. He'd already clawed his way back from a 5-shot deficit and into the lead. His iron off the tee pierced the wind with a low trajectory and scooted onto the green at just the right speed to hold. Instead, it skittered off the right side and into a bunker.

"That was a bad break, but I was probably more bothered by it than he was," Mackay said. "We walked up there. He saw it and said, 'I can get it up and down.' Pretty matter of fact. So I went, 'Cool.'"

Mickelson did, then birdied No. 17, and walked up with a chance to do same at the 18th. A crowd of thousands packing the grandstands on either side of the fairway rose to their feet as one, clapping wildly. Mickelson made that curling left-to-right 10-footer to slam the door on the field behind him. Somehow, at 43, Mickelson isn't simply holding his own, he appears to be turning back the clock.

"He's stronger than he's ever been. He's fitter than he's ever been. He's hungrier than he's ever been and you can understate how much he wants to compete and do well," Mackay said.

"I joke around with him all the time that when he's 60 on the putting green at Augusta, he's going to say, 'I got a chance.' "

Maybe not. But a career Grand Slam hardly seems like a stretch anymore.

"I think that that's the sign of the complete great player. And I'm a leg away. And it's been a tough leg for me," Mickelson said to laughter, "but I think that's the sign. I think there's five players that have done that. And those five players are the greats of the game. You look at them with a different light.

"And if I were able to ever win a U.S. Open, and I'm very hopeful that I will -- but it has been elusive for me. And yet," he said finally, "this championship has been much harder for me to get."

Packers, WPS Health Insurance present 'Operation Fan Mail' for 2013

Operation Fan Mail, the program that recognizes military families at each Packers home game, will mark its seventh season in 2013, and the fifth year it has been presented by WPS Health Insurance.

The program, which debuted in 2007, is designed to honor families with a member who is on active duty. The Packers and WPS Health Insurance will host a family at each 2013 home game and recognize them on the field during pregame activities. A total of 55 families have been saluted during the past six seasons.

?We are honored that we?ve had the privilege of recognizing these military families at Lambeau Field for the last seven years,? said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. ?These men and women, along with their families, make many sacrifices for our freedom, and we?re happy to salute them with our fans.?

"We are proud to partner with the Green Bay Packers through sponsorship of the Operation Fan Mail program," said Jeanne Wittig, WPS Health Insurance director of community relations. "We would like to express our gratitude to the men and women who have made great personal sacrifices on behalf of our country. Through Operation Fan Mail, we can honor and support our military families to ensure our commitment to them as they serve abroad, as well as when they return home."
The Packers and WPS Health Insurance are asking interested families, or friends of eligible families, to submit an essay, 500 words or less, on why a particular family should be saluted. Essays can be sent to: Operation Fan Mail, P.O. Box 10628, Green Bay, WI, 54307-0628. Essays also can be submitted online by clicking here.

Families intended for recognition are those that have a member serving on active duty. The family member can be a spouse, mother, father, son, daughter or sibling. New this year, Purple Heart recipients are also eligible for recognition, even if they cannot return to active service status.
In addition to being recognized on-field prior to the game, selected families will receive four tickets to the game and a $150 Packers Pro Shop gift card courtesy of WPS.

Google Maps for iOS gets an update, offers a dedicated iPad interface

After rolling out an update for Android devices (which has still not reached a number of users), Google has now updated Google Maps for iOS, adding support for the iPad and bringing a revamped Maps interface that offers new enhanced navigation features including live traffic updates and incident reports.

The updated Maps app(version 2.0) also offers a new 'Explore' feature enabling users to browse and discover popular local places to eat, drink, shop, play and sleep. It also offers merchant deals through Google Offers, and indoor maps with walking directions for shopping centres, public transport stations and airports, among others.

The new user interface is cleaner compared to the previous one and brings a new slider menu at the left allowing users to switch between different layers including Traffic, Public Transit, Bicycling and Satellite.

googlemaps-iphone-new.jpgThe major feature of the Google Maps app update is its support for the iPad and the iPad mini. The iPad interface is inline with the recent redesign of the app, that optimised it for Android tablets. The iPad app offers the same Card-like interface offering several route options when one searches for directions, in the form of cards. Different direction modes( driving, walking, transit) can be toggled from the search listing overlaying the maps without going to a different screen and losing map view.

The Explore page also lists places in different groups accompanied by images to make the experience better in terms of aesthetics. However, we were not able to access this feature, at the time of writing this post. Perhaps, it's not available in India.

It's also worth pointing out that the app can run only on iOS 6 or later.

This essentially means that in addition to getting a new Google Now cards-like interface, Google Maps will offer users live traffic updates/ alerts including incident reports in case of accidents, diversions and road blocks. The Explore feature appears to be an extension of Google's Places feature which highlights points of interest for users and offers reviews, ratings and other details related to places on Maps.

Google had first announced the update to its online Maps service and mobile and tablet apps, at its annual Google I/O event in May. Google also intends to release the updated app for iOS.

What's New in Version 2.0
? New design for iPad
? Enhanced navigation including live traffic updates and incident reports
? Explore: A new way to browse and discover popular local places to eat, drink, shop, play and sleep
? Simple 5-star ratings and reviews from friends, plus expert Zagat content
? Great deals from your favorite brands with Google Offers
? Indoor maps with walking directions for malls, transit stations, airports and more

CNN's 'New Day' tops MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' in key demo during first month

By Timn Kenneally

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Half a year after Jeff Zucker took over CNN, the news network is showing signs of revitalization from its previous ratings doldrums.

A month after its June 17 premiere, CNN's morning show "New Day" has shown steady growth in the key 25-54 news demo, edging out MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

From the first week to its fourth week, ending July 12, "New Day" grew from 102,000 viewers in the demo to 121,000 viewers, averaging 111,000 viewers for the month - narrowly besting MSNBC's "Morning Joe," which averaged 110,000.

The demo growth for "New Day" has been steady from week to week - the show, which is anchored by Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira - has averaged 102,000, 109,000, 114,000 and 121,000 in weeks one through four, respectively. ("New Day" also won the key news demo on Tuesday.)

Of course, CNN's new morning entry still has a way if it hopes to top the morning cable competition, of course; in total viewers, "New Day," which averaged 320,000 in its first month, is still behind "Morning Joe," which averaged 352,000, and Fox's "Fox & Friends" - which had a commanding average of 1.067 million total viewers. ("New Day" did however, beat out HLN's "Morning Express," which averaged 290,000 total viewers.) And in the demo, "New Day" still lags behind "Fox & Friends" and "Morning Express."

The good news for "New Day" is that it's growing - which isn't always the case with its competitors. In addition to the steady week-to-week growth in the demo, the new morning offering was up 50 percent in total viewers in its first month compared to the same period a year ago, and grew 18 percent in the demo versus a year ago. Conversely, "Fox & Friends" and "Morning Joe" dipped modestly against year-ago numbers in the past month.
