Apple has released OS X 10.9 "Mavericks." It's now available for download from the Mac App Store.
Mavericks features new apps like Maps and iBooks, and new functionality like notifications you can respond to, tabbed Finder windows and file tagging. It also has a variety of under-the-hood performance and efficiency improvements aimed at helping users get the most from their hardware - especially improving battery performance and memory management.
Apple is releasing Mavericks for free - the first major update to OS X to go free since Mac OS X 10.1. It's installable on any 64-bit capable Mac dating back to some 2007 models. What's more, you don't need Mountain Lion to install it - all you need is Snow Leopard and a connection to the Mac App Store.
Happy Apple's giving it away? Is that tipping the scales in favor of you downloading it? Let me know in the comments.
