California health care providers collect $734M for IT

In less than a year, more than $743 million in federal funding has been distributed to doctors, clinics and hospitals throughout the state ? including $17.1 million to 223 providers in the Sacramento Valley Area ? for information technology to improve health care services, reports senior staff writer Kathy Robertson.

Incentive payments to encourage meaningful use of electronic health records, the funding has contributed toward modernizing California?s health care system by enabling patient information to be managed in ways that improve health care quality, safety and efficiency.

The money has been channeled to Medicare and Medicaid providers from a variety of federal sources, including federal stimulus funds and direct payments from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In practice, doctors, clinics and hospitals use the electronic health records for all patients regardless of how they are insured, greatly increasing the impact of the program. ...
